Was there anything in your reading that surprised you or you didn’t remember from previous readings of the Christmas story?

Even though I knew the genealogy was there, I was still surprised that this is how Matthew begins the story. Perhaps that's why we explored the meaning of it so much on Sunday

The Old Testament prophecies were well known and the Jewish people were expecting the Messiah to arrive. They were looking for someone to free them from Roman rule. Herod was appointed by the Roman Emperor to rule over the area. So, when he heard that the messiah had been born... he also thought this child would use military force to overthrow him and the Emperor. His authority and power were threatened by a baby! crazy huh? So, he wanted to kill the baby before the baby could grow up and lead a rebel force to overthrow the government. They funny part is that Jesus wasn't the kind of military savior that they thought he would be... but they didnt know that at the time. does this help? more questions?
