How is Barabas a representative of us all?

I am not sure that Barabbas stands as a representative for us. Granted that he was set free when the crowd selected Christ to die there are several differences that I believe outweigh and even I believe discredit the supposed similarity. 1.) Barabbas was set free by a decision of the people. We are set free by a decision of Christ Himself. 2.) Barabbas’ supposed freedom was to go back to his sinful ways. Our freedom gives us the power not to go back to our sinful ways. 3.) Barabbas’ freedom had no framework. Our freedom requires the existence of God as a framework. 4.) Barabbas’ freedom was a temporary stay from death. Our freedom is an eternal stay form death. Therefore 5.) Barabbas’ freedom will end in death, our freedom will end in life. These are but a few differences that come to mind but I believe that they go a long way to show the difference between the worlds view of freedom and God’s view of Freedom.

All this is true, so perhaps we are both similar and different from Barabbas? I will say, though that I see another similarity in that he did not ask for his freedom, it was simply given to him, much like our freedom is simply given to us as a free gift - we dont ask for it, we just receive it. But the differences between us and Barabbas are so much more important!!
